This book is not even about what I thought it was going to be about when I started writing it.
When I first began to research this book on K-12 education, I felt compelled to write about all the bad things going on in our public schools. After all, I was seated deep in the epicenter of the maelstrom that was the battle for our public schools in Loudoun County, Virginia. Daily national news about our quiet communities became a common occurrence every evening.

But as I dug deeper into this world, I realized that bad public schools were not the real story. So let me make this clear... this book is NOT about how bad the schools are - we all know that.
"Sacred Fire of Public Education" provides a different look and dives deep into the unintended consequences of what will happen to our K-12 schools when parents who seek the best education possible for their children do the right thing. It ain't pretty.
Confused? Don't worry, all will become clear.
And when it does, many of you will hate this book.
Current studies indicate that OVER 16 MILLION K-12 Students are projected to EXIT Public Schools by 2030 in a Mass Exodus that will decimate the system and make any kind of attempted recovery of public schools nearly impossible.
Now, don't get me wrong. I think that alternative education models such as private schools, homeschools, parochial schools, and other non-government schooling choices are great, and often a necessary choice. I applaud those who have the means and ability to leave the K-12 public schools for alternative options.
There is just One BIG Problem.
What will happen to those who are left behind in our failing public schools?
Do we just abandon OVER 50 MILLION children left in public K-12 to their fate?
Make no mistake...
K-12 Public Schools are here to stay for the foreseeable future. The Yellow Buses will continue to run. The Lunch Lady will still serve Taco Tuesdays. And, if we don't do something definitive, the indoctrination and social programming will continue to expand and broaden scope while our public schools promote mediocrity at best for our children.
The Mass Exodus (which has already begun) will drastically reduce public school system enrollment, which in turn will drastically reduce revenue to the schools. What do you think will happen then to the children remaining in K12 Public Schools?
As the EXIT from Public Schools continues, it will drain the schools of those parents who were, or would be, most vocal in promoting change within the public schools. After all, they and their children have moved on to homeschooling, private schools, or other non-government approaches to education.
Granted, some advocates of change will remain. They may lack the will, desire, or means to Exit and will continue to wait for the big yellow school bus to pick their kids up in the morning and bring them home in the afternoon. I DO NOT fault them at all for this. Our Public School system has become convenient, known, and the norm. As a society, we expect our kids to go to public school from kindergarten through 12th grade. THAT is what we have always done.
But the unfortunate unintended consequence of a Mass Exodus from our public school system is that the schools can only get worse as students continue to EXIT the public school system for more fertile ground.
Again, do we just abandon those left behind?
Of course not!
That is NOT who we are.
But a permanent fix to this problem will not be easy. Massive forces and deep pockets will fight ANY change in our public educational system (see Chapters 5-6).

We have seen that incremental "fixes" don't last.

And that "more money" doesn't help.

History proves that government-run programs will fail every time.
So what in the heck do we do?

Yet... we... have... NEVER... applied that magnificent power to our K-12 Public Education system. Yes, we have added computers and stuck some other band-aids on things. BUT, the foundational way we do public schools has not changed in 50 or 100 years (see Chapter 4 for some intriguing stories).
In all the time that we have learned to fly, invented space travel, reimagined personal transportation, integrated computers into everything, and explored the worlds of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI)...
We have NOT EVOLVED our Approach to Education at all.
Our approach has always been to throw more money at the system. If the system isn't working well, then more money will fix it, right? Unfortunately, ALL evidence indicates that is NOT the case. More money is just another band-aid that just hides the real problems and doesn't do anything to cure the underlying weakness and decay (see Chapter 9 to learn how we can do better).
One of the biggest problems we face when trying to "fix" or "evolve" the education system is the system itself.
Our public education system is a gargantuan monolith of embedded bureaucracy that resists change with all its might and tends to right itself back to its natural shape whenever any change is made.
In fact, we have seen in recent years that for every step we take forward, we end up being pushed back two steps. Our public educational system is arguably much worse today than it ever was. So how do we stop that decay? How do we step forward without losing ground?
If we were to actually accomplish fundamental foundational reformation of public schools (see Chapter 10), how in the world would we make it stick? Why bother if we're just going to end up in the same place in a few decades? See Chapter 11 for the answer.
I have one last critical point before wrapping this up.
There have always been major disparities between our various school systems based on socioeconomic conditions of surrounding communities.
"At-Risk" children, particularly those in high-risk and/or low-income school districts, are impacted the most by the failures of our public schools.
Again, "more money" was always the default answer. And that answer has ALWAYS failed.
But what do we do? If money is not the answer, HOW DO WE HELP OUR AT-RISK CHILDREN achieve success in education and life? Sacred Fire of Public Education is focused on reformation of our educational system for ALL children in ALL communities, which is obviously a BIG challenge. Chapters 12, 13, and 15 provide answers to this very problem.
